Putting your self first

Do you find it hard to carve out the space for your own needs, and especially for rest, not sleep, but rest.. You are not alone and society does not invite it...

When I had young kids, I was constantly on the go and it was really hard to get to a yoga class and even harder to permit myself to rest. When I did get to bed I would often be so overstimulated that I could not sleep.

Caring for my elderly parents recently I noticed the changes that have come about and although it was a challenge I would religiously make it happen even in mini chunks, such as practising yoga or doing a rest mediation lying on the floor of a care home, hospital or even in my car. This kept my nervous system balanced and kept me functioning calmly.

I know my health, work and relationships all suffer badly if I run on empty and that is not serving anyone. The heirarchy of hormones favours the stress ones (survival), and if we run on empty other hormones like oestrogen and progesterone will lower in an attempt to keep a ready supply of cortisol and adrenaline.

This is one of the first things that I teach and show my students, through the wellbeing practices such as yoga, somatic movement and yoga nidra, because everything else flows from meeting our own needs. I encourage you to put yourself first, carve out the time, not as a luxury, not being selfish, but because it serves you and everyone else.

Come and join us today or soon for classes on Wednesdays in person or recorded/online.
